Soccer tips Mika Hakkinen: A winless season will make Hamilton even more determined in 2023

Mika Hakkinen summed up the season for the top Formula 1 teams and analyzed the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.


The two-time world champion noted the skill of race winner Max Verstappen from Red Bull, the vice-championship of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and the first season without victories in the career of Mercedes veteran Lewis Hamilton.


The race was simply perfect for Max and confirmed the brilliant work of the driver and the Red Bull team this season. I was reminded that in 1988 Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna won 15 of 16 races for McLaren. Max did it alone - fantastic. He showed speed and consistency, the car was fast all year and since then, when the team sorted out the minor reliability issues, the performances have been incredible.


Charles Leclerc, in my opinion, had a fantastic race and finished second, losing only to Max in the championship. Checo Perez gave his all, but I think Charles deserved this second position. He started from pole nine times, won three Grands Prix and looked like a real threat to Max in the first part of the season. Of course, second place will make him and the team extra focused on the title next year.


A very difficult year for Mercedes. Sunday`s race was very disappointing, with George [Russell] receiving a penalty and Lewis retiring with a rare reliability problem. It`s incredible that this is the first season that Lewis hasn`t won a Grand Prix since he started his F1 career in 2007-however, I think it will somehow make him even more determined next year. One thing is for sure: he and Mercedes definitely won`t want a repeat of the 2022 season! - Hakkinen wrote on his blog.
